Sam has been very funny with a few things lately. I was watching a friend’s three children the other day and having a fun time. Before I knew what was happening, Sam had lifted my shirt, pulled down my pants waist to expose my gelatinous belly and yelled to her friend, “Benjy, can you see, there is a baby in there!” We are going to have to have a discussion about privacy. Then she joggled my tummy and asked me if baby was giggling yet. Sam gave my tummy a very soft kiss and looks up at me, saying in a softer voice, “that was for baby, mommy.” Dang this kid can steal my heart if she hadn’t already stolen it the day she was born.
I called Matt on the phone to ask him to get something at the grocery store, and Sam wanted to tell me something, “Mommy, I got you a surprise!” “Oh, is it another baby?” “No, Mommy, it is a surprise, I am not supposed to *tell* you now.” This girl can really keep a secret, even for weeks. Any way, she finally gets home (did I mention I am impatient about surprises?) and yells as she walks in the door, “Surprise!” She is nearly hidden behind a large bouquet of flowers: roses, mums, and carnations in all colors. The flowers are very pretty, but not as pretty as her face, so happy to give mommy a wonderful surprise. And I was grinning from ear to ear with a few tears mixed in. She had informed Daddy when they walked in the store that Mommy needed a surprise and picked out the flowers all by herself. Daddy helped her pay for them, but she carried them all by herself.
Sam met a friend of mine that Sam is just starting to get to know. “Do you know that my mommy has a baby in her pouch? The pouch is called a uterus!” Of course she has to say all this very loudly because she is so excited.
Another friend asked her what Sam’s belly button was for. When pressed, the button makes car beeps, did you know that? So I asked her, what did the belly button used to be attached to? “The umbilical cord, mommy!” I said that to her once, a few weeks ago. How does she remember stuff like that?
Anyway we are having a good time, and I get to be so proud of her. At the gym today after swim class, a little girl, about a year younger than Sam, was trying to put on her socks while her mommy got dressed. Sam steps in and says, I’ll put them on for her! So she does, very carefully. Such a sweetie.
